In the sea of news, there are continents of opinions and small islands of facts. And facts, as our second president stated, are stubborn things. We may like them or not. They don’t care. They exist.

For example, there is a widely shared opinion that the future of personal transportation is in electric vehicles, ideally – self-driving ones.

To check the depth of facts behind this opinion, Deloitte conducted a massive survey around the globe, and came up with some interesting numbers.

Take it or leave it. These are the facts. Just like Joe Friday would want them. Just like John Adams would have them.

Fact # 1: In the US, 11% of participants said they prefer EV, and 62% said they’d rather have a traditional gas-burning car – or, as they call it in the survey, ICE (internal combustion engine) one.

Fact # 2: Out of the EV driving group, only 10% prefer to charge at the public charging station.

Fact # 3: Out of those who prefer to use public chargers, only 15% prefer to charge at the “traditional gas station with EV chargers”.

As we know, there are about 3.3 million EVs on the US roads now. If 10% of the owners prefer public chargers, this is 330,000. If 15% of those want to use the EV chargers at the gas station, that’s 49,500 potential customers for all the EV chargers installed at the gas stations across our great country.

Thus, we ask you, c-store owners: how much are you willing to spend to get a slice of this mighty 49,500-person pie? Especially considering the early demise of the Green New Deal, buried by the new administration on the first day – no, the first hour of our 47th president’s second term?

One has to be careful about where they spend their money, and make sure there’s a realistic return on this investment, based purely on its commercial merits. Change of political winds often has this kind of sobering effect.

Does it mean that the EV charging business is gone? Of course not. There are millions of EVs in America, and their owners still need to charge their fancy toys. What the c-store operators need is accurate, and location-specific data allowing the operators to gain reasonable ROI, in a reasonable time period to pay it off.
